Range Rules

Topton Fish & Game Association Firearms Range Rules

  1. Treat every gun as if it is loaded
  2. Always keep gun pointed in a safe direction
  3. Always keep your finger outside the trigger guard until you intend to fire
  4. Always keep the gun unloaded, until ready to use
  5. Firearms that are not cased or holstered must be carried unloaded, action open, safety on, muzzle down and muzzle down range
  6. We are a muzzle down club
  7. All members and Guests must display their range cards, or Guest pass while on club property
  8. Safety glasses and ear protection must always be worn by members and Guests
  9. No touching firearms or anything on the shooting bench when anyone is down range 
  10. Check with other shooters to ensure actions are open and firearms are unloaded before going down range
  11. Firearms must be pointed down range at all times
  12. Long guns must use chamber flags when not actively using.
    1. If you don’t have a chamber flag, the action must be open, and no magazine inserted in firearm.

Multi-Use Ranges 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6

  1. All shots must impact a berm.
  2. All targets must be positioned in the lower ½ of the back berm.
  3. Paper target, steel targets or self-healing (plastic) targets only
    1. Minimum distance on steel targets: 7 yards on pistol, 50 yards on rifle
    2. No shotgun/birdshot on club backers. If you want to pattern or test shot, bring your own targets
    3. 180-degree rule applies in all multi-use ranges
  4. When using a table: 
    1. Always stand behind the table with your back facing the road. All firearm muzzles must be facing down range or into a side berm
    2. Never uncase or load and unload firearms between the table and the back stop. 
    3. No touching firearms or anything on the shooting table when anyone is down range 
  5. Never work out of your car or truck bed. No muzzles may point towards the road.

Rifle Ranges 7/75-yd, 8/100-yd and 9/200-Yard Ranges

  1. All shots must impact the back berm  
  2. All targets must be positioned in the lower ½ of the back berm 
  3. All shots on the 7/75-yd Range must be taken from the top of the shooting benches
  4. All targets on the 7/75-yd Range must be position on the club stands
  5. All shots on the 8/100-yd and 9/200-yd Ranges must be taken with the muzzle behind the black steel sky plates. No shooting forward of the black steel sky plates
  6. No intermediate targets on the 8/100-yd and 9/200-yd ranges.
  7. No pistol may be used on ranges 7/75-yd, 8/100-yd and 9/200-yd ranges. 
    1. Rifle caliber pistols are acceptable. (i.e., Contenders)
  8. When zeroing a rifle on Ranges 8/100-yd and 9/200-yd, you must first zero on 7/75-yard range or another range
  9. No using the 100 yd back stop on the 9/200 yd range
  10. Paper targets, steel targets or self-healing (plastic) targets only
    1. 7/75-yd range – paper targets only, no steel targets
    2. 8/100-yd and 9/200-yd Ranges – All targets on the back berm. No intermediate targets.
    3. No birdshot
  11. No vehicles on the 7/75-yd range and 8/100-yd range.

Trap Range

  1. When using the club hand throwing post, hand throwers or automatic throwers, send birds toward the orange stake located in the upper right-hand corner of the trap field
  2. When not shooting, action must be open
  3. No rifles or pistols may be used
  4. No birdshot larger than #6 shot, or over 1350 feet per second

General Rules

  1. No shooting airborne clay birds anywhere but the trap range
  2. No shooting at targets on the ground. No shooting at bottles, cans, or frangible targets.
  3. Members may bring their own steel targets for personal use and their guests. Users of these targets assume all risks and liabilities. These targets must be removed when the member leaves the range.
  4. Club tripods are for hanging steel targets only, no clay birds or paper targets on tripods
  5. No steel core or penetrating ammo on steel targets
  6. No fully automatic firearms or simulated fully automatic firearms (Bump stock, Hellfire, etc.)
  7. No .50 BMG caliber or larger rifle (no restrictions on muzzleloaders or pistol)
  8. No tracer or incendiary rounds
  9. No exploding target, Tannerite or fireworks
  10. No alcohol is permitted on the ranges at any time. No shooting while under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  11. No littering. 
  12. Take all trash with you including all live rounds and empty cases
  13. Pickup all shotgun hulls and brass.
  14. All Club Members are range officers. Correct and report any unsafe conditions.
  15. Shooting hours are 8 am to Sunset
  16. Failure to abide by these rules and policies may result in the loss of membership.  
  17. Rules subject to change during a club match. Changes are at the match director’s discretion.
